Interlagos, 24 November –Felipe Massa received a special message for his hundredth Grand Prix in red and it came from the Ferrari President, in the form of a letter which we reproduce here in full:

Dear Felipe,

This is an important Grand Prix for you, not just because you will be racing at home, in front of your fans. It will also be your one hundredth race with us, which is an amazing journey that only very few drivers can claim to have done before you. It is also coincides with the end of your first ten years in Formula 1, all of which have been powered by an engine built here in Maranello. I am pleased that you chose to record this anniversary with a special helmet design, featuring one hundred prancing horses.

These past ten years have been very intensive. With us, you staked your claim as a driver, winning eleven Grand Prix, and coming within a whisker of taking an incredible World Championship crown, as well as making a significant contribution to the Scuderia winning two Constructors’ World Championship titles. With us, you have grown as a driver and as a man and you are part of our history.

Where you are now in Interlagos, you have experienced some great moments, but also some very bitter ones. Today, you are on the eve of the final Grand Prix of what has been a particularly difficult season: let’s hope you can end it with a very nice result!

From Monday, all our thoughts will be focussed solely on next year’s championship, because we have had enough of this one. It will be a crucial year, your seventh as a racing driver for the Scuderia, because the objective is clear for all to see and is so obvious, it’s not even worth repeating here. I am sure that, first and foremost, you are keen to answer your critics and prove them wrong and it falls to us to provide you with the means to do that, by giving you a winning car.

I send you a warm embrace,

Luca Montezemolo

Felipe will wear a very special helmet for this special weekend. Designed by the artist Jens Munser, based on instructions from Felipe and produced by Schuberth, a long time partner of the Scuderia and the driver, the helmet features a chrome and gold Prancing Horse, on which are mounted a further one hundred small horses, one for each race contested at the wheel of a Ferrari.

Brazilian GP - Massa: “extra power from the people here”

Interlagos, 24 November – When you are a native of a country where the whole population seems to be mad about Formula 1, you are going to have a busy time as a Brazilian driver, so after a few days of making a variety of sponsor and charitable appearances, Felipe Massa was also called to today’s FIA Press Conference at the Interlagos circuit, which stages the nineteenth and final round of the F1 World Championship this weekend. “For all of us,” said the Ferrari man referring to fellow Brazilians Bruno Senna and Rubens Barrichello on the panel with him, “this race is like a championship within the championship because racing at home is so important. I have had two victories here and so my hope is to have another good weekend. Then, from Sunday night it will be time to focus one hundred percent on next year.”

On a more technical than emotional theme, the local man was asked about chances of plenty of overtaking on Sunday. Certainly, if you pass a car on the pit straight where you don’t have the use of the DRS, then it’s true the car you have just overtaken can pass you back down the next straight where the wing can be moved, so there could be a lot of passing moves.

The Paulista revealed he was counting on the crowd to help him this weekend: “We have nothing new on the car compared to the last few races, although we will be trying out the front wing again and I hope it will work well this weekend, without the shaking problem I experienced befor. But I will feel some extra power from the people here and I hope I can aim for the podium, because I really want to score my best result of this championship on Sunday. Interlagos is very special to me, as it was here I started my career “over the wall” as we called it, on the karting track and I also used to come as a kid to see Ayrton and Nelson racing.”

Brazilian GP - Alonso: “the team has been stronger this year”

Interlagos, 24 November - Unlike the large areas available at the newer circuits, at Interlagos space is at a premium everywhere, so all the media were crammed tight into the Scuderia Ferrari hospitality area this afternoon to listen to what Fernando Alonso had to say, going into the final round of the season, the Brazilian Grand Prix.

The media are keen to focus on the Spaniard’s fight for second place in the Drivers’ classification and Fernando had to admit that, actually, it did not mean so much to him. “I finished second last year and no one remembers and I won’t recall it in ten or twenty years time,” he said. “So if I finish second, third or fourth this time, it will not be on my mind in the future. It’s not a big priority, but we will try and have a good race. Maybe there is a possibility of rain on Sunday, which means we might not get the same result as usual with Red Bull, McLaren and Ferrari always in the top five or six places. If that is the case and we do a good race, maybe I can take some points off Jenson, but maybe I lose points to Webber and finish fourth. It’s not so important for us, but maybe it gives me some self confidence for the future seeing myself ahead of drivers in better cars than ours.”

Asked to look back at the year as a whole, as usual with Fernando, he chose to emphasise the positive aspects. “I will remember it as a not bad season overall from a personal point of view and how the team approached this season, improving in areas where we were weak last year,” he said. “The team has been stronger and I feel that with a competitive car next year we can be very strong and fighting for the world championship. Last year, our starts and strategies were not so good and we had a conservative approach to the races and we improved in all those areas this year. Now, all we need is the car that can do it.”

As for this weekend, Fernando is realistic about his chances. “It will be very difficult to win on Sunday, but we will go for it, because we are professional and competitive people. When I put the visor down on Sunday, me and the team will be going for the win if possible.”

Asked what he would like to see on next year’s car, the Ferrari man outlined the relative strengths and weaknesses of this year’s car the 150º Italia. “This year, we were competitive in terms of the mechanical side of the car and there is not much difference between the various engines between the teams and tyres are the same for everybody. So the key point is aerodynamics and getting the tyres to work properly right from the first lap, as part of a more aggressive, less conservative approach to the year. Why am I confident I can challenge for the championship next year? Because I am at Ferrari.”
